Island Health Water Use Permits
New Home Buyers
When buying a new home, especially one that does not use city water, it’s critical to understand the properties’ water source. Many homes in rural areas use water from a well. It’s essential to check the water quality and the well’s condition and equipment to ensure the water is safe, clean, and dependable.
Testing for Safe Drinking Water
Testing for safe drinking water involves checking whether the water is free from harmful bacteria and minerals. Lenders often require this test for home sales involving a mortgage. It assures the buyer and the lender that the new homeowner won’t have to move out because of bad water or face significant expenses to get water to the home or to set up a water treatment system.
Inspecting the System
Inspecting the system takes into account the well’s age, how much water it can pump, how deep it is, and the quality of the water. If there’s a lot of equipment for pumping, storing, and treating water, having a professional check these systems can confirm they’re in good shape, identify maintenance needs, and estimate how long the equipment will last and what it might cost to replace it.
If you're buying a new property and need any of these services, do not hesitate to contact us.
Home Owners
BC Aquifer handles everything related to your home’s water supply, including a 24/7 emergency service if there’s a problem.
Water Supply
If your water stops running, the pressure drops, or is inconsistent, you might have an issue with your well, the well pump, or the pressure tank that sends water to your house. We can identify and fix these problems or replace any necessary parts. If your well has underground damage, we also partner with local well-drilling contractors to address it.
Water Quality
Do you buy bottled water because you don’t like how your tap water tastes or smells? Bottled water is expensive, inconvenient, and bad for the environment because of the emissions from transport and the plastic waste it produces. Additionally, if your plumbing, appliances, or laundry show signs of scale or stains, ignoring these issues could lead to more significant problems, such as, damage to your plumbing or appliances. It can also reduce how much you enjoy your home and its potential resale value.
The right water treatment system can fix most problems regarding, water taste, smell, or staining. This solution could treat all the water in your home or the water you drink. Each water source is unique, therefore, we start with a lab analysis to recommend the best treatment option.

Water Safety
If your water supply is at risk of contamination, BC Aquifer offers solutions to ensure its safety. These might include ultraviolet lights, disinfecting chemicals, and various filters. We can also design systems with safety features that stop your water supply if the treatment system fails or needs maintenance.
System Reliability
Usually, a well-designed and installed pump and treatment system should work well for over 10 years. However, that doesn’t mean, it won’t need maintenance. For example, most treatment systems have filters or other parts that need to be replaced from time to time. Pump systems, often exposed to the elements, should be checked every year. Regular inspections and maintenance by professionals keep your system running smoothly and prevent unexpected repair costs and service interruptions. BC Aquifer offers special pricing for annual service plans.
Home Builders/Property Developers
BC Aquifer partners with home builders and property developers on the island to set up water supplies for new homes. We handle simple projects like installing well pumps and water treatment systems for single residences. For larger projects, like multi-unit developments, we conduct flow tests on shared wells to ensure there’s enough water. For remote or island properties, where well-drilling might not be possible, we offer alternatives like rainwater harvesting, using surface water, or desalination, along with storage solutions.
We can also collaborate with your hydrogeologist or well-drilling contractor for long-term development projects.

Island Health Water Use Permits
Island Health (previously referred to as the Vancouver Island Health Authority, or VIHA) requires water use permits for any establishments serving water from private sources, such as restaurants, hotels, and community centers. Getting a permit involves a Drinking Water Officer (DWO) from Island Health reviewing your proposed water system design and operations plan. With a focus on preventing bacterial infections, the operations plan should outline the schedule and methods for regular water quality monitoring and water treatment maintenance. These steps are similar to those followed by municipal water utilities to ensure water safety, just on a smaller scale.
BC Aquifer assists new applicants with selecting the right equipment and developing comprehensive operation and maintenance plans. We’ll help you work with Island Health during the application process. Once your application is approved, we can supply the specified system and provide ongoing services as outlined in your maintenance plan. An EOCP (Environmental Operators Certification Program) qualified technician from our team will oversee all these services.
Comprehensive laboratory testing is also required as part of the permitting process. BC Aquifer can also assist in obtaining the necessary New Groundwater Source testing to meet regulatory requirements.
More information about obtaining water use permits can be found at the Island Health website (https://www.islandhealth.ca/learn-about-health/drinking-water/drinking-water-legislation-approval).
The Small Water Systems Community Network also provides additional information and contacts about operating and maintaining small water systems in the province (https://www.smallwaternetwork.org/).
